Barry Obama plumbs new depths . . .

While it’s obviously that Barry Hussein Soetoro Obama has little regard for the British Colonists, in a colossal slight, he is sending exactly NO ONE to honor Baroness Thatcher in tomorrow’s proceedings.  It’s a double slight because it suggests that Barry thinks Joe “Plugs” Bite-me serves some other purpose on our payroll.

Margaret Thatcher, R.I.P.

Our “Progressive” friends will be dancing and singing, and smearing – it’s how they celebrate deaths of Conservative leaders – the great indefatigable Margaret Thatcher. Nonetheless, Lady Thatcher lives on . . .

Our Tacky President

The Daily Caller reports that President Obama was offered a feast of Maine treats, including University of Maine lobster salad and Wild Blueberry Pie when he visited Senate Republicans for a Capitol Hill luncheon on Thursday.  But he didn’t touch a bite, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) told reporters following the 1:30 PM eat n’ greet.  That’s because the President didn’t have a food “taster” with him, said Collins, who was responsible for the menu . . .

But, he suited up . . .  like Archie Bunker . . .

Really? You argue that the Media isn’t biased? Really!

We recall in the last election cycle, the contretemps surrounding senate candidates Todd Akin in Missouri and Richard Mourdock in Indiana, both reputedly Republican. Mr. Akin bizarrely asserted that women have an anatomical defense against rape suggesting that their bodies simply reject pregnancy caused by violation.  Mr. Mourdock said during a debate and in defense the unborn, “even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that is something that God intended to happen.”

Of course Mr. Akin’s view is false with ample evidence to reject it. Nonetheless, he believed he had learned it in readings of credible sources and later apologized. No matter, the mainstream media in both Missouri and nationally vilified not just Akin, but ALL Republicans, “troglodytes” if you will.

It is clear in Mr. Mourdock’s remarks and subsequent groveling as he tried to free him himself from the bonds of left-wing “correct” thought that he was not suggesting that God intended rape, but rather, that God creates all life.  For those who are rigidly ignorant and dismissive of pro-life arguments, this particular issue arises from a logical fallacy, to wit: A woman should be allowed an abortion for a pregnancy resulting from, as Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said, ” the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother.” There you have it:  Annihilate the innocent product of rape or incest, or if the mother has an unwanted headache, or worse, acne! But, rehabilitate rapists, or better yet, as democrat strategist Zerlina Maxwell puts it, “Train men not to rape.

Who knew it is so simple?!

The pro-abortion forces see no controversy or conflict, no deliberative issues, nothing but a “woman’s right to choose,” because, it’s her body . . . and her right granted by the Supreme Court of these United States that make her’s the decisions of God. So thoughtful observers disagree.

Now, to the point we bring you Colorado State Sen. Evie Hudak an “insensitive” woman no less. Her view is apparently that rape is inevitable, your defenses are limited  Statistics are not on your side and if the government isn’t extant, you’re out of luck, just grin and bear it . . .

Specifically Senator Hudak said to Amanda Collins, a rape victim, after her testimony in favor of concealed carry gun defenses, “I just want to say that, actually statistics are not on your side even if you had a gun.” Adding, “And, chances are that if you would have had a gun, then he would have been able to get that from you and possibly use it against you.”

So there you have it. You’re being raped. Rape too often leads to horrible physical consequences coupled with the obvious psychological trauma, and sometimes to death. But, not to worry, left-wing women senators in Colorado have your back . . . Grin and bear it . . . Submit, if you will . . . and maybe, just maybe, your attacker too is a “Progressive.”

And you hear virtually nothing from the Mainstream Media apparently as they nod in agreement with Senator Hudak.

Dr. Williams is in the classroom again

Dr. Williams exposes an ugly, pernicious history in “Mandated Wages and Discrimination.”  Although it is likely unintentional among “Progressives” today, the result of an arbitrary, non-market driven increase in the minimum wage, serves to lock out from employment altogether, young, uneducated and unskilled largely minority youth . . . a dream of the Southern Democrats who crafted Jim Crow laws; and of Northern “Progressive” Democrats content to keep Negroes out of the union dominated industries of the North.

Dr. Williams eludes to a modern phenomenon, unions favoring a higher minimum wage still, even though they’ve been invaded by “Coloreds.” Why would that be? you ask.  Because most labor contracts and “project labor agreements” incorporate mandatory escalation clauses. If the minimum wage rises, by formula, contractual wages rise and employers, particularly governments – or taxpayer owned businesses if you will – must pay the higher rate for which they didn’t contract.

Dr. Williams is right. Again.

Dr. Walter Williams has a delightful facility for putting seemingly complex questions into clear, concise and easy to understand conclusions . . . so easy, even a “Progressive” should be able to grasp them. It’s a product of Occam’s Razor, not Barry Hussein Soetoro Obama’s meat cleaver.

Higher Minimum Wages

In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama proposed raising the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $9 an hour. That would be almost a 25 percent increase. Let’s look at the president’s proposal, but before doing so, let’s ask some other economic questions.

Are people responsive to changes in price? For example, if the price of cars rose by 25 percent, would people purchase as many cars? Supposing housing prices rose by 25 percent, what would happen to sales? Those are big-ticket items, but what about smaller-priced items? If a supermarket raised its prices by 25 percent, would people purchase as much? It’s not rocket science to conclude that when prices rise, people adjust their behavior by purchasing less.

It’s almost childish to do so, but I’m going to ask questions about 25 percent price changes in the other way. What responses would people have if the price of cars or housing fell by 25 percent? What would happen to supermarket sales if prices fell by 25 percent? Again, it doesn’t require deep thinking to guess that people would purchase more.

This behavior in economics is known as the first fundamental law of demand. It holds that the higher the price of something the less people will take and that the lower the price the more people will take. There are no known exceptions to the law of demand. Any economist who could prove a real-world exception would probably be a candidate for the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and other honors.

Dr. Alan Krueger, an economist, is chairman of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers. I wonder whether he advised the president that though people surely would be responsive to 25 percent increases in the prices of other goods and services, they would not be responsive to a 25 percent wage increase. I’d bet the rent money that you couldn’t get Krueger to answer the following statement by saying either true or false: A 25 percent increase in the price of labor would not affect employment. If anything, his evasive response would be that found in a White House memo, reported in The Wall Street Journal’s article titled “The Minority Youth Unemployment Act” (Feb. 15), namely that “a range of economic studies show that modestly raising the minimum wage increases earnings and reduces poverty without measurably reducing employment.” The WSJ article questions that statement: “Note the shifty adverbs, ‘modestly’ and ‘measurably,’ which can paper over a lot of economic damage.” My interpretation of the phrase “without measurably reducing employment” is that only youngsters, mostly black youngsters, would be affected by an increase.

University of California, Irvine economist David Neumark has examined more than 100 major academic studies on the minimum wage. He states that the White House claim “grossly misstates the weight of the evidence.” About 85 percent of the studies “find a negative employment effect on low-skilled workers.” A 1976 American Economic Association survey found that 90 percent of its members agreed that increasing the minimum wage raises unemployment among young and unskilled workers. A 1990 survey found that 80 percent of economists agreed with the statement that increases in the minimum wage cause unemployment among the youth and low-skilled. If you’re looking for a consensus in most fields of study, examine the introductory and intermediate college textbooks in the field. Economics textbooks that mention the minimum wage say that it increases unemployment for the least skilled worker.

As detailed in my recent book “Race and Economics” (2012), during times of gross racial discrimination, black unemployment was lower than white unemployment and blacks were more active in the labor market. For example, in 1948, black teen unemployment was less than white teen unemployment, and black teens were more active in the labor market. Today black teen unemployment is about 40 percent; for whites, it is about 20 percent. The minimum wage law weighs heavily in this devastating picture. Supporters of higher minimum wages want to index it to inflation so as to avoid its periodic examination.
