We wish George McGovern well as he slowly nears his maker. While he was a “Progressive” before it was cool – OK, it isn’t and wasn’t – he was a cheerful man, simply uninformed. Years after his colossal defeat by Richard Milhouse Nixon, Mr. McGovern actually engaged in the real world, opening a Bed & Breakfast in New England, only to fail and write in the Wall Street Journal how informing and liberating it was to learn what the laws he had advocated actually cost job creators.
We also had the pleasure of riding in a cab with Mr. McGovern during a torrential storm in Washington when we saw him standing forlorn, soaked to the bone and ignored at 19th and K Street. We picked him up and went for a ride to the Democratic National Club, well out of our way, and enjoyed every minute of the ride . . .
